I used Excel since that suited CSV files and there was already a tool for Excel that could write the QIF files after manipulation. What I have is not suited to QIF files, quite a different structure, but QIF files are more defined so that helps, I think you would have to read in each record, analyse what you have and write out an appropriate record to a new file.

The parsing is done by a heap of VBA code which looked at each line and acted according to the rules I set up. Investment accounts I built my own spreadsheet which parsed each line and wrote out a new spreadsheet. Bank and Credit card accounts I used a modified version of a spreadsheet built by another Moneydance user to get the data into a suitable layout then an excel add in to output QIF files. So it was necessary to bring the files into Excel and manipulate them there. In other words CSV files and badly formatted ones at that.Д«ank and credit card files were not suitable for the Text or CSV importers that are available for Moneydance and you can forget about importing CSV files into Investment accounts (there is a user written extension that imports some CSV data into Investment accounts). I was working with a version that did not provide a QIF export function, all it provided was so called 'Excel Compatible' files. Is recorded as a BuyXfr to a bogus Income category named after the security If I could just change those to simple Buy transactions, the result would be much easier to clean up. That would help cleaning up a few problems, one in particular is that a SHRSIN transaction (from Quicken) is converted to a BuyXfr, with the Xfr account being a newly created income account named after the security.
